Is My Paolo Banchero Card a Rookie Card?

You bought a Paolo Banchero card — or you’re about to — and the listing says ROOKIE RC. Is it actually one?

This page settles it. Banchero went #1 overall in the 2022 NBA Draft out of Duke, played his first NBA season in 2022-23 with the Orlando Magic, and won Rookie of the Year. That single fact does most of the work: his true rookie cards all come from 2022-23 NBA sets. Everything else — the Duke cards, the later-year cards, the customs — is a different category, and eBay titles will happily blur all of them together.

The three-question test

Run these three checks against the card itself, not the listing title. If all three pass, it’s a true rookie card.

1. What uniform is he wearing? Orlando Magic → keep going. Duke (blue, Blue Devils marks) → stop, it’s a college / pre-rookie card, not a rookie. No exceptions.

2. Is there an RC mark on the card? Rookie-year cards carry the manufacturer’s RC shield — usually a small badge in a corner or beside the nameplate. Some brands use their own rookie branding instead or as well (Donruss’s Rated Rookie banner, Contenders’ Rookie Ticket, Hoops’ rookie designation). An RC mark on a Magic card is the card telling you, in print, that it belongs to the rookie class.

3. What season is printed on it? Look for 2022-23 — on the front design, on the back copyright line, or in the set name. That’s his rookie season. A 2022 date with a Duke image is a draft-year college card. 2023-24, 2024-25, 2025-26 — not rookies, however the seller has titled it.

Pass all three and you’re holding a rookie card. Fail any one and use the family guide below to work out what you actually have.

✅ True rookie cards — the 2022-23 NBA sets

His rookie class runs from the cheapest paper up to the premium autographs. All of it is Magic-uniform, RC-marked, 2022-23:

• Entry tier — NBA Hoops, Donruss (the original Rated Rookie), and the Chronicles sampler.
• Chrome / prismatic flagships — Prizm, Select, Donruss Optic and Mosaic.
• Autograph tiers — Contenders Rookie Ticket up to National Treasures rookie patch autos.

❌ Duke / Draft Picks — first licensed cards, but not rookies

Panini’s draft-year products put Banchero in a Duke uniform months before he had an NBA card. You’ll see them titled Prizm Draft Picks, Chronicles Draft Picks, Contenders Draft Picks and similar. They are real, licensed, widely collected cards — his earliest cards — but they carry no NBA marks and no RC designation, so the hobby treats them as pre-rookie.

This is the single most common misidentification in live Banchero listings: search his Draft Picks cards and a large share of the titles still contain “ROOKIE” or “RC”. Quick tell: if you can see blue-and-white Duke gear, no amount of “RC” in the title changes what it is.

❌ Post-rookie-year cards — 2023-24 and later

Once the rookie season ended, Banchero kept appearing in every annual release. Those cards often use the same brand, the same design language, and sometimes the same photography as his rookie — and they will still show up in searches for “Banchero rookie”, because sellers type the word in. Two things create most of the confusion:

• Inserts and subsets with “rookie” in the name — retrospective or tribute subsets that celebrate a past rookie season are not rookie cards.
• The brand transition. Banchero’s rookie class is a Panini NBA class. Later seasons move into the Topps/Fanatics NBA era, so you’ll find Banchero cards on brands that never printed a rookie of his at all. A Topps-branded Banchero card cannot be a rookie card.

Sources: Wikipedia’s Panini Group entry records that “In January 2009, the National Basketball Association (NBA) announced Panini would become the exclusive trading card partner of the league beginning with the 2009–10 season” — the licence in force through Banchero’s 2022-23 rookie year. Wikipedia’s Fanatics, Inc. entry records the handover: Fanatics took long-term NBA and NBPA trading-card rights in August 2021, acquired Topps in December 2021, and “It was announced in October 2025 that Fanatics, through its subsidiary Topps, obtained the NBA trading card license.” Banchero duly appears at base #87 on the 2025-26 Topps Basketball checklist — a Topps NBA card, and not a rookie.

❌ Unlicensed and custom “rookies”

Cards from unlicensed draft-era brands, “1/1 custom” makers, and aftermarket-signed base cards are not part of any rookie class — there’s no manufacturer RC designation to inherit and nothing to authenticate against. For anything signed, run it through the fake-autograph guide before you send money.

Where the mistake actually costs you

Misreading a card cuts both ways, and both are avoidable:

• Buying — paying a rookie-tier price for a Duke Draft Picks card or a 2023-24 card because the title said RC. The card in the photo always outranks the title.
• Selling — listing a non-rookie as an RC gets returns, negative feedback, and on repeat, listing restrictions. Describe what the card says.

Buying the real thing

If the answer to “is this a rookie card?” needs to be yes every time, two habits get you there:

1. Buy graded when it matters. A PSA/BGS/SGC slab label states the year, set, parallel and RC status — the grader did the identification for you, and the label is checkable against the cert lookup.
